Can cinnamon lower blood sugar levels?

Cinnamon is one of our oldest spices – it has been know for over 5,000 years. It can add a wonderful flavour to waffles, rice pudding or mulled wine, but can it also help type 2 diabetics to improve their blood levels?
In the past, numerous scientific studies have tried to examine whether cinnamon can have a positive impact on the blood sugar levels of type 2 diabetics. If you analyse and summarise the results of these studies you can come to the following preliminary conclusion:

Cinnamon seems to have a positive impact on various blood parameters in type 2 diabetics. On the fasting blood sugar level, the triglyceride level, LDL cholesterol and the total cholesterol.

This sounds promising. However, one must keep in mind that the studies that we currently have access to vary in their structure – the amount of ingested cinnamon, the duration of therapy and the choice of the patients were not equal. Therefore we cannot definitely say how much cinnamon a patient has to take in per day and for how long this has to happen in order to show positive results. It is also unclear which type 2 diabetics would benefit from an additional cinnamon therapy.

However, there is no reason for you not to include cinnamon into your daily diet, if you like, for example, in yogurt, cottage cheese or cereal. Cinnamon (without sugar) has no calories. If you intend to regularly take cinnamon capsules as a dietary supplement, then consult your doctor first.

Under no circumstances should you stop or change your current diabetes therapy. Cinnamon can at best be an additional option for you. You definitely need your diabetes medication to stay healthy.
